On March, 30 Stanislav Byshok, a political analyst at the CIS-EMO think tank (Russia), posted a cover of his brand new book «The New Europe of Vladimir Putin: The West’s lessons for Russia» on his Facebook page. On the cover, there’s a photo of Front National’s Marine Le Pen and the Russian President shaking hands. Byshok’s book is to be released at the end of April by Book World (Knizhny Mir) publishing house.
Five days later, on April, 4 Anton Shekhovtsov, a visiting fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (Austria), published a cover of his new book «Russia and the Western Far Right: Tango Noir» in his blog. On the cover, there’s the very same photo of Front National’s Marine Le Pen and the Russian President shaking hands. Shekhovtsov’s book is to be published later this year by Routledge publishing house.
Anton Shekhovtsov has been monitoring what he calls Russia’s information/propaganda warfare against the liberal West for quite some time. In his articles and speeches, the scholar has pointed at the CIS-EMO think tank specifically as one of the tools in the Kremlin’s putative warfare. According to the table of contents Shekhovtsov published, CIS-EMO is also touched upon in «Russia and the Western Far Right: Tango Noir.» Given the author’s unceasing interest in this Russian think tank, it seems quite evident that he was aware of Stanislav Byshok new book’s cover but decided to replicate it nevertheless.
Coincidences do happen. Yet sometimes they are not coincidences at all.
